Dog Daydreams

Do these dark depths of the Maine winter leave you dreaming of summer? As I sit typing with chilly hands, surrounded by the white glare of shimmering snow outside, I certainly find myself yearning for hot summer days in the sun. The dog days of summer, if you will. Our golden retriever Sanders was arguably my soulmate and did not like the cold perhaps as much if not more than I do. He straight up LOVED the summer sun, and would lay in the sunny grass all day if we let him. I mean, look at that face.

Same goes for Ted – these two were just entirely different sized peas in a pod when it comes to dog days of summer – sign em up for fun in the sun!

I think the only one around these parts enjoying the recent snow is our dog Burn, but even he seems a bit disillusioned – that may be because even his doggo companions don’t want to play outside this time of year! Alas, he remains hopeful with his favorite collection of toys awaiting on our snowy deck, as he knows he won’t have to wait long; its dog days all the days around here, and fetch waits for nothing.

words of the wives

Be prepared: Dogs are a lot of work. Do not get a dog without researching the breed and carefully considering if you can take on the responsibility. If the answer is a resounding ‘yes’, then do it. If not, hold off and make some changes and go back to the idea of getting a dog when you have everything necessary in place. Dogs need love, care, and commitment, and will offer nothing less in return. Honor their love and loyalty by having enough respect to consider and make the right decision by the dog. We did, and it’s been worth it every step of the way!

In short: analyze critically and prepare yourselves and your home fully, and soak in the love a dog has to offer – you’ll really never be the same.

PS. If you do not like golden retrievers, you might want to go ahead and move along.
